Did we mention she played one of her originals outside of The Grammy Awards? Get to know Not in Harmony‘s Undiscovered Spotlight, Elliot Lee:
Q: Why music?
A: Nothing makes more sense to me than spreading and perpetuating the self validation that music has always brought me. It’s all that I can see myself doing.
Q: What do you want people to know most about you/your music?
A: I want people to know that my music is their voice. I want people to find themselves and reassure themselves through my lyrics. And I want them to dance while doing it. 🙂
Q: How would you best describe your musical style?
A: I’d call it dissonant pop 🙂 I present these songs that seem upbeat and pop-y at first, but turn out to be very heavy and hit home for a lot of people when they listen closer.
Q: Who is your biggest musical influence?
A: Tyler Joseph, for sure. There are a lot of runner ups though. I could go on for ages about all of the people who have influenced my music. Haha.
Q: Who is your dream collaborator?
A: If I could sing on a Watsky track I’d be a very happy Elliot.
Q: What is your favorite song at the moment?
A: “Jealous of The Moon” by Nickel Creek. It has dreamy vocals and lyrics that make my soul ache, in a good way. Lol.
Q: What inspires your songwriting?
A: It’s always random things that happen to me or cross my mind, things that make my chest burn with anger or sadness or nostalgia or any other strong emotion. My brain gets very melodramatic when pretty much anything ever happens to me and goes into a “how can I turn this into a big deal by making a song out of it” frenzy.
Q: What is your favorite lyric you’ve written?
A: Hard choice!! It changes every time I write a new song 🙂 I think right now my favorite lyric of mine is: “I want you to understand / I try not to be the way I am”. It’s been stuck in my head a lot lately. It’s in an unreleased song of mine called “Sorry I Love You” that really digs into the struggle of wanting to be a better person, but falling back into bad, usually self-destructive habits, and how painful it is to be super self-aware of this.
Q: Where is your favorite place to write?
A: While I’m walking around town is when I get my best lyrics, but my favorite place to sit down and write a whole song is laying in bed with my little MIDI piano laying next to me and my phone’s voice memo app open.
Q: What is your favorite hobby outside of music?
A: Thrifting!! Almost my whole wardrobe is thrifted.
Q: What is your all-time favorite TV show?
A: Gotham, for sure. Hamtaro is a close second.
Q: How do you find new music to add to your playlists?
A: I’ll usually start a new radio on Spotify using one of my favorite songs and just pick out the bops.
Q: Last question! What is your favorite late night snack?
A: Halo Top (the peanut butter one) or Chips and Queso.
We HIGHLY recommend checking out “The Sink” by Elliot. Throw in a pair of headphones and focus in on the lyrics. So powerful.
